Professor Branicki was, by invitation, the Interim Head (March 2013 to June 2015) of the Surgical Institute at Al Ain Hospital where Drs A l- Ali, AlMahmoud and Mousa also practice. In addition, Prof Branicki, Prof Hammad, and Dr Al Fardan have also provided services at Tawam Hospital. Currently, Dr Mousa has very busy clinical commitments, being a leading figure in the UAE in the field of Endocrine surgery. The late Assoc Prof Torab established a service for weight reduction (bariatric surgery) in Al Ain in 2002 and was leading regional authority in the field.
Since 2010 Prof Branicki has been the Research Grant Coordinator for countrywide activity of the Terry Fox Foundation for Cancer Research, with oversight of 49 new grants totaling more than ten million AED which have since been awarded from donations raised by Terry Fox Runs in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah. Professor Branicki participates at each Run and addresses assembled runners at the start of each Run as to the how funds raised are being utilized for various cancer research projects in the UAE.
Dr Ali Jawas played a major role as Program Director of the General Surgical Residency training Program Through multiple collaborative works the general surgery program was started with one program and four site of training including Tawam, Al Ain, Al Mafraq and SKMC hospitals. This was subsequently relinquished, the Health Authority assuming responsibility for training. He continued as an active Member of the General Surgery Residency Program Advisory Committee and Program Evaluation Committee (ACGME accredited program) being involved in the selection of residents at interview processes, development of residency academic teaching and clinical training. Moreover, Dr Jawas is the General Coordinator and Examinations Officer for the Arab Board General Surgery Exam in the United Arab Emirates, involved in organizing written examinations and participating in the clinical examinations.
In May 2017 Professor Fikri Abu-Zidan was asked to chair the UAE University Human Research Ethics Committee so as to address the concerns and problems encountered regarding running this committee. He managed to solve all encountered problems within 12 months. This required major administrative effort which included 1. Train the Committee Coordinator on management skills, 2. Restructure the Committee, 3. Refine the process by defining the regulations, revising the applications, making a flowchart for the process and developing a checklist and testing it in real life, 4. Educate the Committee members, hospitals Research Ethics Committee members, and PhD students about the regulations, process and procedures of our Committee, and 5. Completed the process for all delayed applications. The review process was of a high standard and included 2-3 reviews for each application which improved the research design of the applications. The Department of Surgery is proud of this major achievement.
The Department has organized numerous of CME/CPD activities including an International Surgical Conference with more than 600 delegates held in Abu Dhabi in October 2003. Prof. Branicki also chaired the Organizing Committee for a highly successful International Conference – Recent Advances in Clinical Oncology Conference which took place in February 2007. The meeting was organized by the Oncology Research Group with 31 International Overseas Faculty from Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, Korea, the UK, the USA and regionally from Saudi Arabia. Sixteen UAE based speakers also participated and the meeting attracted more than 1000 delegates from around the world. The Proceedings of the meeting (Eds: Prof. Branicki, Dr. Saad Aswad, the Late Dr. Fawaz Torab, Prof. Abdu Adem) were published in a volume of the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences (Vol 1138).
The Trauma Group chaired by Prof. Fikri Abu-Zidan organized two international Conferences entitled ‘Trauma Management, Critical Care and Prevention in Al-Ain on February 2009 and 2011. The Conference was an initiative of the Trauma Group at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), United Arab Emirates University in association with Tawam Hospital in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine, Al Ain Hospital previously managed by the Medical University of Vienna and VaMed, General Health Authority for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and Sheikh Hamdan Awards for excellence in Medical Sciences.
In April 2004 the Department, led by Prof Branicki, hosted inaugural back to back Provider and Instructor courses in the UAE for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), a training program of the American College of surgeons. Four invited Faculty and staff from the USA and one from Canada participated in the teaching and Provider courses. These courses are training Emirati graduates and others in trauma care and will help reduce the burden of disabling illness and mortality from motor vehicle crashes in particular. In March 2008 the FMHS was the site for inauguration of the Advanced Trauma Provider Course for Nurses (ATCN) in the UAE, followed by an ATCN Instructor course. Professor Branicki has been an Instructor on 92 of these three day courses held at weekends (Thu pm, Fri am, pm and Sat am) and has been the Couse Director for most of these. Prof Abu Fidan, and Drs Jawas and, more recently, Dr Mousa have participated as Instructors.
