Teaching
The Department makes substantial contributions to both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Education Programs.
Undergraduate
The Department is actively involved in the Preclinical Sciences Course (PSC) teaching
programs involving Problem Based Learning, didactic teaching and clinical skills training.
Prof Branicki is the Coordinator (teaching and assessment) for two of the nine clinical
skills training modules in the PSC which are being taught and examined in summative
assessments by Faculty surgeons and adjunct title holders at Al Ain and Tawam Hospitals.
For five years Prof Branicki was Chair of the Policy and Review Committee and when
this amalgamated with the Undergraduate Management Committee to form the Undergraduate
Medical Curriculum Committee (UMCC) he chaired the combine d Committee for a further
five years.
The Department is heavily involved in teaching activities for undergraduates in the
Junior (JSC) and Senior (SSC) Surgical Clerkships each of which is held five times
a year. The JSC is an 8 week rotation in the surgical disciplines of General Surgery,
Orthopaedics, Urology, Vascular Surgery and Anaesthesia. The Senior Surgical Clerkship
comprises General Surgery (4 weeks). The surgical Specialty Clerkship comprises Ophthalmology
(2 weeks) and Otorhinolaryngology (2 weeks). Teaching for students also takes place
during active clinical activities as some members of the Department have hospital
clinics and 'on call' activities throughout the academic year. Students are usually
taught on patients being cared for by department members who are the admitting doctor
providing care. Summative assessments are undertaken at the end of clerkship and the
assessment involves a written (MCQ) paper produced by the Department, a National Board
Medical Examination (NBME) from the USA, an Objective Structured Clinical Examination
(OSCE) in the Simulation and Training Center at CMHS, bedside clinical examinations,
General Surgery and Orthopaedics, students led presentation in the hospital as well
as tutor assessments of activity and case write-ups.
Postgraduate
Regarding postgraduate training, a local General Surgical Residency Training Program
received Arab Board accreditation in 2005. This program, initiated by the CMHS, subsequently
came under the auspices of the Health Authority, Abu Dhabi, in 2008. Residents in
training rotate for experience between Al Ain Hospital, Mafraq Hospital, Sheikh Khalifa
Medical City (SKMC) and Tawam Hospital. The program received American Council for
Graduate Education-International (ACGME-1) accreditation in June 2013. The Resident
Education Committee and the Program Evaluation Committee meet regularly at one of
the four hospitals. In 2010 Prof Branicki initiated in the Abi Dhabi Emirate, the
only Multiple Site (Al Ain Hospital, Tawam Hospital, Mafraq Hospital and Sheikh Khalifa
Medical Center) single Residency Program in General Surgery, under the auspices of
Postgraduate Education Committee at CMHS. Subsequently; Residency training in Urology
and Ophthalmology were established.
In November 2013, Department of Surgery, at the initiative of Prof Branicki hosted
the Joint inaugural Joint Surgical Colleges Fellowship examination, which was the
first to be held outside the United Kingdom. Surgeons were examined at CMHS, Al AIin
and Tawan Hospita, with four examiners from each of the four Royal Colleges (Edinburgh,
England, Glasgow) and Ireland (Dublin). Subsequently, Prof Branicki has been an Examiner
for four years.
In terms of training, trauma is the leading cause of death between the age of 1 and
44, in the Abu Dhabi emirate, and much effort has been expended in training Residents
and graduates in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Courses. Prof Branicki, Course
Director has taught 92 of these three days courses since their introduction to the
UAE in 2004. Department members have also participated as Instructors in teaching
the course with the assistance of Instructors from the hospitals. The Department introduced
at CMHS Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses in 2008 and both these courses run three or
four times annually. Prof Abu-Zidan is a leading international authority on ultrasound
training and has conducted numerous Focused Assessment Sonography in Trauma (FAST),
Critical Care Ultrasound, Abdominal Emergency Ultrasound courses in the UAE and overseas.
The Late Assoc Prof Torab established a Clinical Skills Training Center in Laparoscopic
Surgery at CMHS and was the Director of numerous courses involving bench top simulation
and operative training of surgeons. Department members have also had significant roles
in Vascular Access Courses (Dr Jawas).
